Using virtual reality to test vision in people with MS
Many people with MS experience vision problems such as seeing double, “washed-out” or blurry images. People living with MS say that vision is the second most important body function they would like to improve.
Vision issues in MS often come and go, which makes it difficult to reliably measure them. So vision changes are often not prioritised when doctors make decisions about progression and management of MS.
Recently, researchers developed vision testing with virtual reality (VR) devices that may enable patients to assess their vision more comprehensively. They can be used at home, which means people could test their vision more frequently.
About the project
We don’t yet know how well the VR vision tests work in comparison to standard clinic-based tests. So the team will investigate if the VR vision tests (used in clinic and at home) can provide results that are valid and consistent when compared with conventional testing.
How will it help people with MS?
The results could help us shape future research using VR vision tests at home. In the long-run, frequent home-based vision assessment could support more effective, convenient, and personalised care for people with MS.
