Tips for planning a short break
Our MS Short Breaks Service is available to everyone affected by MS in the UK. We can help you to plan a break in the UK or abroad, or look for respite care in a residential care home setting.
When planning a break, preparation is essential. Our hints and tips will give you a few ideas of what to consider before going and how far to plan ahead.
When arranging a short break, you may want to think about passports. It can take up to three months for your passport to arrive if you don’t already have one, so this should be the first thing to consider when planning a trip abroad.
If you need to apply for a passport, or to renew one, you can look on gov.uk for information about how to do this.
Where do you want to go on your holiday? Maybe you want to take a break in the UK, or perhaps you're planning to go further afield? Different destinations will require different considerations.
Before contacting the Short Breaks Service, it's good to have clear thoughts about what you want and need from a break. This way we can help you to organise a break that’s right for you.
How much do you have to spend on a holiday or break? The cost of going away may include transport, accommodation and catering costs as well as things like car hire, insurance and renting any equipment you may need.
It’s useful to make a budget before you begin to plan your break so you know what you can afford – this will help you get the best from your break.
If you are on a limited budget, or if a break looks out of reach for you financially, we do have a Grants scheme. Read more about our Grants scheme.
4. Access requirements
Your MS may mean you need a bit more support when travelling. That could mean accessible rooms, roll in showers, equipment hire and in-airport assistance.
Before speaking to the Short Breaks Officer, make a list of what you need and we will do our best to help you find it.
Our booklet, Short Breaks: a guide to holidays, short breaks and respite has everything you need to know about arranging a short break, including:
- definitions of respite care and short breaks, including examples and ideas
- equipment hire
- transport search directories for accessible accommodation
For more information, call the MS Helpline on 0808 800 8000 and ask to speak to our Short Breaks Information Officer.
