Our message for the new government: It's time to make MS a priority

Friday 5 July 2024

It’s official: Keir Starmer is our new Prime Minister and the Labour Party will form the government. No matter how we voted as individuals, we all know that people living with MS deserve better.

Making MS a priority

During the general election, we made sure MS was part of the conversation. Together, we sent thousands of emails to candidates across the UK. And over 11,000 of us signed our open letter to the Prime Minister.

As Keir Starmer settles into his new office and decides his priorities, now's the time to raise our voices even louder and make sure MS is on his agenda. If you haven’t signed our open letter yet, we’re keeping it open for signatures for a little longer.

Responding to the outcome of the election Nick Moberly, CEO of the MS Society, said:

Living with MS can be debilitating, exhausting and unpredictable, and right now, life is often harder than it has to be. But the new government has the opportunity to truly transform the lives of the 150,000 people with MS in the UK.

Now is the time to tackle the inequalities in access to neurology services, so that people are diagnosed and get effective treatment quicker. The government has the power to finally reform the Personal Independence Payment (PIP) assessment so people can maintain their independence. And the opportunity to better support people with MS to stay in quality work for longer.

We look forward to working with the new government over the coming years to help them deliver the positive change that people with MS have waited far too long to see.

Whether it’s the NHS or social care, disability benefits or support for people with MS to stay in work, the new government will be starting to put their plans into action. We’ll be watching and getting in contact with new ministers to make sure they deliver real change for the MS community.

Making sure all our voices are heard

Today's just the start of campaigning for change with a new government. With hundreds of new MPs, we have plans to make sure every MP knows how they can speak up for their constituents living with MS. And together with our community and campaigners across the UK, we’ll be making sure MS is on the agenda. We won’t stop until all our voices are heard.
