Reflexology

Some people with MS use reflexology, a kind of massage on parts of the foot.

In reflexology, pressure is applied to different zones of the foot. These zones are believed to correspond to different areas of the body.

Reflexology and MS

Research into reflexology and MS suggests it could help manage pain.

Reflexology is a low-risk therapy and there are no known serious side effects. But it should be used with caution if you've got certain foot conditions, including gout, skin ulcers, vascular disease and arthritis.

Speak to your GP or MS team if you're thinking of trying it.

Reflexology in the UK

Reflexology isn’t regulated by law and practitioners aren’t required to have any specific training or be a member of any professional organisation. There are various organisations reflexologists can join.

Reflexology practitioners who meet a set of national occupational standards can register with the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council.

There are lots of holistic treatments that can help manage MS. For more information, read our two-part explainer with Dr Agne Straukiene.
