Hope, strength, and giving back: Sheena’s MS Journey
In December 2018, just as I was preparing for Christmas, my world was turned upside down. I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, following an exploratory MRI for a collapsed, left foot.
This news shook me, but over time, I’ve found strength in acceptance of this new chapter.
My life has changed, unimaginably. My children, who’ve always been very supportive, found their own ways to help. My son co-DJ’d a charity event for MS in Dublin, in March 2021. And my daughter ran the London Marathon for MS in October 2022. Also, recently, in Jan 2025, I became a member of the MS Council for Northern Ireland, to use my voice and experience to help others facing similar, daunting challenges.
MS forced me to slow down and think about life differently
Up until this point (63 years) I lived life at full speed and enjoyed many adventures, worldwide. But now, every day I’m reminded of the importance of my health. I often recall what my grandmother used to say, "Your health is your wealth." I didn’t understand this when I was young, but now, those words ring true.
I’ve learned the power of resilience. Even when life gets tough, creativity and adaptability have enabled me find new ways to face each day. Although my journey with MS has been hugely challenging, I’ve discovered that by changing my outlook, I can find fresh strength and purpose.
I’ve faced other health challenges too, including thyroid cancer, which was thankfully removed successfully through surgery.
During these setbacks, I’ve been surrounded by the loving and generous support of my family and friends. The MS Society’s unwavering commitment, from counselling to physical therapy, has also been invaluable and something for which I’ll be forever grateful.
As I move forward, I’ve come to realise that now is my time to give back. I’m 70 this year! And I’m choosing to leave a gift in my will to MS Research, so that this vital work can continue to support all MS journeys.
It’s my way of playing a small part in something much bigger than myself
For me, it’s not just about finding a cure, but also about ensuring that the services and support we all need continue to thrive. Whether it's finding new treatments, easier access to resources, or attending social activities, staying connected is key. The MS Society plays a vital role by improving the quality of life for those with MS.
I’m choosing to leave a gift in my will to the MS Society
By doing this I hope I can influence others facing the same obstacles as myself. If my support can contribute to a better future, not just for those living with MS today, but for people living with MS tomorrow, I’ll be happy. Because I feel I’m choosing to make that very important difference.
When I look back on this “road,” I see problems, yes, but also there are moments of hope, strength, and the knowledge that I’m not alone.
We all have the power to make a difference. By leaving a gift in my will, I can contribute towards ensuring that this crucial work to improve lives continues and expands for years to come.
I’m proud to share my story in the hope that others might be inspired to take action too
Leaving a legacy gift to the MS Society means we can all play our part in the ongoing fight to transform lives and fund ground-breaking research to combat MS. A legacy gift of any size will assist in creating a future where MS is no longer a barrier. How great would that be!
Together, we can make a lasting impact and offer hope to those living with MS and to future generations, who will benefit from the progress we make.
