What changes the probability of developing MS?

About the project

A risk factor is something that increases your chance of developing MS. Or, of progression. This project will use the UK MS Register data to look at lots of different risk factors at once.

Researchers will look at risk factors that we have some control over like smoking, high blood pressure and high blood cholesterol. And risk factors we can’t control, such as age. They’ll investigate whether having different combinations of these factors affects the severity of a person’s MS. Or their chances of getting MS in the first place.

They’ll do this using a special type of mathematical analysis, the first time this has been done with the MS Register data.

How will it help people with MS?

The researchers will use this information about risk factors to build on our understanding of the causes of MS. And the causes of progression. In the future, this could inform advice for people with MS about treatments. There may be different advice for different people, based on their combination of risk factors.
