Making ESA work

Yes

ESA was introduced in 2008 and is the benefit for those who cannot work due to illness or disability.

We believe that the test for the benefit, the Work Capability Assessment (WCA), is flawed and wrongly finds too many people with MS ‘fit to work’. We’ve had some success in changing the system, but there's still work to be done.

We’re fighting for

  • Better descriptors for fluctuating conditions like MS.
  • More recognition of the impact of hidden symptoms like fatigue and pain.
  • More weight to be given to information provided by a claimant's healthcare professionals, like MS Nurses.
  • Building more transparency into the system.

What we’re doing

  • Telling the government about your experiences of claiming ESA.
  • Working together with other charities as part of the Disability Benefits Consortium to lobby the government for change.
