Tips for planning a short break with MS

Thinking about taking a break and need some help to arrange this? Or maybe you're unsure of what practical support is available? The MS Short Breaks Service is here for you.

Our MS Short Breaks Service is available to everyone affected by MS in the UK. We can help you to plan a break in the UK or abroad, or look for respite care in a residential care home setting.

When planning a break, preparation is essential. Our hints and tips will give you a few ideas of what to consider before going and how far to plan ahead.

1. Passports

If you're arranging a short break overseas, it's worth checking your passport well in advance. This is especially important if it's going to expire within several months. If you need a new passport, it can take up to three months to get one at peak holiday times. So this should be the first thing to consider when planning a trip abroad

Many countries, including those in the EU, won't let you in if your passport will soon expire. These countries (and airlines that fly there) will insist your passport is valid for either three or six months. For EU countries this time period starts from after the date you plan to come home.

2. Location

Where do you want to go on your holiday? Maybe you want to take a break in the UK, or perhaps you're planning to go further afield? There'll be different things to think about depending on where you go.

So before you contact our Short Breaks Service, it's good to have clear thoughts about what you want and need from a break. That way we can help you organise a break that’s right for you.

3. Budget

How much do you have to spend on a holiday or break? The cost of going away could include transport, accommodation and catering costs as well as things like car hire, insurance and renting any equipment you might need.

It’s useful to make a budget before you start planning. Then you know what you can afford and can get the best from your break.

4. Access requirements

Your MS might mean you need a bit more support when travelling. That could mean accessible rooms, roll in showers, equipment hire and in-airport assistance.

Before speaking to our Short Breaks Service, make a list of what you think you'd need and we'll do our best to help you find it.
