Going abroad

If you’re planning to go abroad, these resources can help you think about all aspects of your trip.

Planning your break

Accessible tour operators and specialist travel agencies can make the planning process simpler. Search Tourism for All’s directory for some ideas or call them on 0845 124 9971.

The Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) has a standard checklist that you can use to think about your requirements when planning a break. Fill it out yourself or with a travel agent. Download the checklist

If you use a wheelchair http://wheelchairworld.org has reviews on how accessible places are all over the world (and within the UK). It covers tourist sights, accommodation, travel, eating out and public transport.

Vaccinations and taking medication abroad

Some people with MS worry that travel vaccinations could have an adverse effect. If you have any concerns about any vaccinations you need to have, discuss the options with your GP or MS nurse.

Use the Fit For Travel website to research what’s needed for the country you’re visiting.

Useful information about taking medication abroad is available at NHS Choices

Travelling by plane

For information about travelling by plane, see our page on accessible transport.

Insurance

Information about travel insurance and travelling with medical conditions is available on the website of the Association of British Insurers (ABI). Remember that if you don’t disclose any pre-existing medical conditions, your policy may be invalid.

The European Health Insurance Card is valid in most European countries, and lets you get state healthcare free or at a reduced cost if you need it during your visit. It provides cover for pre-existing medical conditions but is not an alternative to travel insurance. Apply for a free EHIC online.
