Agreement signed for Brambles Respite Care Centre

The MS Society has signed an initial agreement to transfer Brambles Respite Care Centre to a new provider, possibly preventing it from closure.

Following a revised offer from the company previously interested in taking over the centre, MS Respite & Care Services Ltd, ‘Heads of Terms’ have been signed to transfer the centre into their ownership.

Brambles was due to permanently close this week after we announced in October that negotiations to transfer the centre had ended.

With the new agreement in place, the care centre will still temporarily close tomorrow (Saturday 26 November), but work will continue between the Society and MS Respite & Care Services Ltd to agree precise terms and discuss detailed transfer arrangements.

It’s hoped that contracts can be exchanged mid December and that the centre will reopen to guests in the first few days of January, with the transfer being completed by the end of January. (Editor's Note 20 January 2012: For an update on the latest progress with the transfer of Brambles, please see the Brambles website.)

A service for people with MS

MS Respite & Care Services Ltd has committed to continue providing a respite service for people with MS and under their proposed transfer, staff would keep their jobs.

Stuart Nixon, Acting Chair of the MS Society, said: “It’s never been our wish to close Brambles and we’ve been working hard since June 2010 to find suitable alternative arrangements for guests and staff. We didn’t have any other options when we announced in October that the centre was to close – so we’re delighted that we have been able to re-establish common ground with MS Respite & Care Services Ltd and now have a new opportunity to keep Brambles open.

“We have a lot to do over the next few weeks before contracts can be signed, but we believe there is real cause for optimism that a transfer is still possible.”

Linton Connell, director at MS Respite and Care Services, said: “We are also very pleased that there now seems to be a clear path to saving Brambles and preserving this near-unique service for the South East. It is a centre of excellence and we are excited to be working with the Society towards successfully concluding the purchase."
