Join our MS Society Ambassador Scott Mills to look back on 2021.

What happened in 2021?

This year has been a challenging one. But we've achieved so much thanks to your support. From fundraising to campaigning, join us as we look back on 2021.

We want to say thank you to our amazing community. This year, we’ve achieved so many brilliant things with your support. We’ve faced some challenges – the pandemic hasn’t gone away. And we’ve been busy keeping our community up to date with COVID-19 information. But it hasn’t all been COVID related.

MS Helpline

We’re here to support our community through thick and thin. This year, we’ve answered over 21,000 queries. And our MS Helpline celebrated its 30th birthday.

Neurology Now campaign

Nearly 8,000 of you signed open letters to UK Governments. We called for more funding and support for neurology so people with MS can get the essential care they need.

Support through services

We were there for communities across the UK in many different ways. Around two thirds of our local groups were able to continue providing vital services by moving them online. And as COVID restrictions were lifted, some groups felt comfortable to restart activities face to face.

In Northern Ireland, our team of eight volunteer counsellors delivered more than 900 counselling sessions. In Wales, our Pontio project has gone from strength to strength – 34 people have used the befriending service so far, since it was set up in May 2021. And our Scotland-wide Wellbeing Hub secured more funding to run for another 18 months.

Research development

Our research programme saw many highlights over the year. This included our commitment to raise £12.9 million for our ground-breaking clinical trial Octopus. It’s the first ever multi-arm, multi-stage trial for progressive MS. And will transform the way we test treatments to slow or stop MS progression.

None of this would be possible without your amazing donations and fundraising.

Stop MS Appeal

We launched our Team Stop MS video, encouraging people to do whatever works for them to fundraise to stop MS. The video featured a few famous faces, and a total of 530 people signed up. We also received over 100 pieces of press overage.

This year, we raised over £7 million through our Stop MS Appeal. And we’ve now raised over £55 million of our £100 million target, so we’re well over half way.
