"I don’t just read an MS neurology textbook, I read my dad"

Ghazia Ahmed

I'm Ghazia, I’m 23 years old and live in London. I am a fourth year medical student from St George's, University of London.

I’ve been aware of MS from a young age, as I watched it gradually affect my father. At first, I was too young to understand why he couldn’t take part in parent races on Sports Day or why he said his arms felt funny sometimes.

As my love for science grew, I learnt about the biology behind MS and started linking it to my father. In fact, even now, I don’t just read an MS neurology textbook, I read him.

MS research goals

I've learnt to observe the small details and explore them in my own head - something I hope I can translate into groundbreaking research with my own team of researchers one day.

After graduating as a doctor, I would love to specialise in neurology, so I can provide the reassurance, advice and support that people need when they are diagnosed with MS.

Joining the Research Network

I first heard about the MS Society's Research Network when surfing the web, looking for volunteering opportunities that I could relate to on a personal level. I was overwhelmed with the MS Society’s research and how well established their projects were.

The MS Society’s aims met mine as a daughter, researcher and medical student. Being on the Research Network has been such a unique experience. I would highly recommend everyone to get involved.

I hope to take on more projects next year involving clinical trials, reviewing more research proposals. And perhaps run an MS coffee morning in my university hospital.

If at first you don't succeed

Just think about all the times you’ve fallen down and picked yourself back up. Each time you lose hope and work hard to regain it. Research is like that too - it takes time, but once it gets there, it’s there to stay.

I believe that every condition has a cure. I hope that research for MS progresses so much that we find treatments for everyone and, ultimately, we find that cure.

Thanks for reading, till next time!
