Therapies

"My doctor told me about the range of therapies, such as drugs and complementary medicine, that could help with my symptoms."

When you are first diagnosed with MS, you will naturally want to know what is available in terms of treatments and therapy. Although there is presently no cure for MS, you'll be happy to hear that there are some therapies available that can play a vital role in alleviating the symptoms of MS. These range from drug treatments to complementary therapies.

Disease modifying drugs (DMDs)

Disease modifying drugs act to reduce the number and severity of MS relapses. There are presently four MS disease modifying drugs licensed in the UK: Avonex and Rebif (both beta interferon 1a), Betaferon (beta interferon 1b) and Copaxone (glatiramer acetate).

Complementary therapies

It makes sense that moderate exercise, leading a healthy lifestyle and watching what you eat can make a difference to your sense of wellbeing. Many people with MS also find that complementary and alternative therapies have helped them. Popular therapies amongst people with MS include diets, dietary supplements, herbalism, homeopathy, aromatherapy, chiropracty, osteopathy, acupuncture, meditation, massage, and yoga.
