Wales Fact File
- Wales has a population of 3,234,000 of whom 3,881 are at risk from MS
- Wales has 9.4 whole time equivalent neurologists compared to the 28 - 30 required and only one MS specialist located in Cardiff
- Wales has nine full-time and one part-time MS Nurses
- The MS Research Trust recommends one MS Nurse per 300 patients. We, therefore, need a further 4 nurses to meet the needs of the MS community.
- The Association of British Neurologists advises one consultant per 100,00 of population. Wales currently has 1 consultant per 340,000 of population
- The incidence rate is approximately 1 in 800 people
- There are two Prescribing Centres for the Disease Modifying Drugs Risk Sharing Scheme located in Wales at Cardiff and Swansea. MS patients from North Wales and Powys have to travel across the border to England to the Walton Centre in Liverpool or centres at Cheshire & Shropshire.
- 21% of the population in Wales speaks Welsh which is why Multiple Sclerosis Society Wales/ Cymru has launched its Welsh Language Policy and has made a number of publications available in Welsh.
