National Assembly for Wales

In May 1999, The National Assembly for Wales was established and the nature of government in Wales changed fundamentally.

Since then the Assembly has had the power and responsibility to develop and implement policy and make vital decisions on a range of areas including health and social services.

The structure of the Assembly is a unique combination of a Cabinet system with a committee structure that enables wider involvement in policy and development than is the case in Westminster.
The Cabinet

The Cabinet, or Welsh Assembly Government comprises of nine members of the Labour Group within the National Assembly, seven of whom have a subject portfolio. Of particular interest to MS Wales/Cymru is the role of Edwina Hart, Minister for Health and Social Services. She has responsibility for health and the NHS in Wales, social services and social care.

Health & Social Services Committee

The Assembly has Subject Committees covering the 7 subject portfolio. The important Subject Committee for MS Cymru in its campaigning work is Health & Social Services.  Members of this committee are:

  • Lorraine Barrett (Lab)

  • Irene James (Lab)

  • Ann Jones (Lab)

  • Val Lloyd (Lab)

  • Helen Mary Jones (Plaid Cymru)*

  • Dai Lloyd (Plaid Cymru)

  • Jonathan Morgan (Conservative)*

  • Nick Ramsay (Conservative)

  • Jenny Randerson (Liberal Democrat)*

    * Current Health Spokespersons.
