The provision of care for many patients with long-term neurological disease falls far short of the desirable. The present neurological consultant workforce cannot keep up with new referrals in any meaningful way, let alone provide proper on-going care. Unless we have a very substantial expansion in neurology staff in Wales, this is going to remain a serious problem, notwithstanding any government guidelines and NHS Frameworks - Consultant Neurologist Letter extract

Campaigns in Wales

Through our campaigning activities, MS Cymru and the MS community in Wales, have played a vital part in raising awareness of MS and pressing for a better deal for people with MS.

It hasn't all been easy and there's still a long way to go but by working together we can make a positive difference to some of the issues that matter most to us. Issues such as access to MS nurses and occupational therapists, the fact that Wales has the lowest number of neurologists with the longest waiting times in the UK, the lack of a 'key contact' within social services when our needs change and our Summer campaign to press the Welsh Assembly Government to provide the necessary funds for those patients requiring disease modifying drugs.

The story so far....
In the short time since our formation, MS Cymru has achieved a number of successes including:
  • The allocation of £1.7m by the National Assembly for Wales for disease modifying drugs and inclusion on the Implementation and Monitoring Group for the Risk Sharing Scheme .

  • Establishment of the Wales Neurological Alliance .  The Alliance has successfully campaigned for a review of neurological services encompassing the whole of Wales.

  • Annual Partnership Day at the National Assembly for Wales has provided people with MS from across Wales with a forum to make their voices heard by raising issues directly with their AM's.
