Getting Your Picture in the Paper

A great way to let people know about what you are doing is by getting your picture in the local paper

Convincing the local press or radio stations to highlight your story is a great way to get more sponsors. They love local stories about local people, so what are you waiting for?!

To get your own personal story in the media, you have to produce a press release, which should only take about thirty minutes. The press release has to be very clear and concise and has to be set out in a certain way. We have included an example on the page to show you the best way to do this.

There are some very important things you need to include in the press release and these are:

The 5 W’s

  • What are you doing?

  • Why are you doing it?

  • When will you be doing it?

  • Where will you be doing it?

  • Who is doing it?

and also....

Information about the MS Society and the projects you are raising money for, your contact details, a catchy headline and a quality photo.

You can find out who the best person to send the press release is by looking in your local paper, looking in your business directory or, if you have got access to the Internet, why not check out either Mediauk or the Newspaper Society for more information.

Once you have sent the press release in, give them a call a couple of days later to check they have received it – this is your chance to make sure your story is remembered.
