Role descriptions

It's great to have role descriptions to give your volunteer a clear understanding of their responsibilities.

It's important to make sure that you use role descriptions when recruiting new volunteers. They can really make the difference in attracting a potential volunteer to our organisation rather than someone else's. The role on offer needs to look appealing and rewarding - something the volunteer can look forward to.

You could start by working through the general role descriptions here. Some of them may be exactly what you need, others may need something adding or taking away. This is a relatively straightforward process. Simply reproduce the role description adding in or taking out the relevant tasks and responsibilities. But do remember to make sure you add new tasks in the right order of priority; most important parts of the role near the top, less important parts to the bottom.

Another important question to ask is how much time these roles will take up. Giving an expected time-commitment with the role description can be useful, reassuring them that they are not signing away their whole life.

It may be that you've never even seen a description for your role. If you don't have one, why not use one of our general role descriptions as a starting point, and ask your committee to help you tailor it to the role you fulfil?
