The Essentials say we have to hold an information event. Does this mean having a big conference with speakers?

Holding an information event can be as simple as arranging for someone to talk about MS or a related topic at one of your branch meetings. You could ask an MS Nurse or physiotherapist to speak, and advertise using the local press and posters. It really doesn't need to be a big and expensive event.

The important thing is that you publicise it both within and beyond the branch, so that people who aren't branch members have the opportunity to come along. You also need to make sure that information is the focus of the session, which will encourage people who just want to find out about living with MS to attend. So if, for example, you are having an appropriate speaker at your AGM, make sure that your external publicity highlights the talk rather than the branch's business, which will be of less interest to non-members.

Of course you can hold a bigger session if you want, perhaps with a neurologist or even a number of speakers, or you might think about using a different venue.
