What are the current time-served rules for branch chairs?
Following the Society's AGM in 2003, a change was made to the rules regarding the terms of office for branch chairs. Chairs are now elected for 3-year terms instead of 1-year terms and can be elected for 2 consecutive 3-year terms only, then they will have to stand down for at least one year.
When you elect someone new as branch chair they will be elected for a term of 3 years.
Therefore:
- If you elected someone new as branch chair in 2006, they don't need to stand for re-election until April 2009.
- If they became chair in 2007 they will need to be re-elected in April 2010.
- New chairs elected this year (2008) don't have to stand again until April 2011.
When a branch chair has been in post for 6 years they must stand down at the next branch AGM.
