Reducing Excess Reserves

It is the Society’s policy, in line with recommendations from the Charity Commission, that all parts of the Society should have reserves equivalent to the expenditure needed for just a few weeks. Addressing this issue has been identified as a priority by the Board of Trustees.

This both ensures that the money that our donors give us is made to work on behalf of people affected by MS and also gives us the financial security we need as an organisation to safeguard our work and our future development.

Branches with excess reserves need to consider how they would wish to spend this money either, locally, regionally or nationally. This does not have to be spent immediately but can be part of a plan over a number of years.

The following documents are designed to assist branches with ideas and examples. Your Local Support Development Officer can help you with this work and any spending plan should be passed to them and attached to your branch Proforma.
