Questions to ask your respite care provider

We provide a checklist of questions to help you find the best respite care for your needs

Respite Care Directory

The aim of the directory is to offer information about the range of respite care available to people affected by Multiple Sclerosis (MS). It can provide you with some options when deciding which is the right respite care to meet your needs.

A short description of the different types of provider can be seen below.

Preferred Providers

the MS Society prefered provider scheme logo  The Preferred Provider scheme has been developed to offer external providers the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to meet the respite needs of people with MS, particularly those with advanced and complex needs. To gain Preferred Provider status, centres will be required to work through criteria identified in a detailed assessment devised by the Society to evaluate the services provided. Preferred Providers are clearly marked in the directory.

Congratulations to the following new Preferred Providers:

Sue Ryder Care Thorpe Hall Hospice, Peterborough

St. Peter & St. James Hospice and Continuing Care Centre, North Chailey

Priory Grange, Potters Bar

Please note that The Chaseley Trust, Eastbourne, is no longer a Preferred Provider. John Grooms Beresford Close, Dan-Y-Graig in Wales, Le Court Cheshire Home in Hampshire and The Oxfordshire Cheshire Home have all now closed.

Visited Providers

The Society has started a programme of visits to as many of the respite providers as possible to confirm suitability. The directory clearly states which providers have already been visited and when the visits took place. However, the MS Society cannot guarantee quality of service. It is always advisable to contact a provider directly to discuss your individual needs and preferences and establish that their service can meet those particular requirements.

Respite Care at Home

There are many agencies known to the Society that provide care in a person's own home. The services on offer can vary from assistance with light domestic tasks to full personal 24-hour care. It is advisable to contact your local agency for information on the services that they provide.
