Some questions to ask about respite care
When choosing respite care, it is important to be clear about your needs and preferences. Once you're sure of these you can try to match these with the respite care on offer.
Regulated respite care providers have a duty to provide brochures and literature ('Social Users' Guide') to introduce their particular care home, service or centre. You will also want to ask your own questions. The questions listed here may be a useful starting point.
Fees
- What does the fee include?
- Are there any extra charges?
Other People
- Can carers be accommodated? If so, how much do they pay?
- Is the accommodation for carers provided in separate rooms or are there double rooms?
- Can guests visit at any time?
- Will there be other people of my age and sex?
- How does the centre make sure that people on respite are integrated with other residents?
Accommodation
- Are single rooms available or will I be expected to share a room?
- Do rooms have their own toilets and baths? If not, how many bathrooms are there?
- Do rooms have an emergency call service?
- What is the smoking policy?
- Is there a garden?
Leisure
- Are there any organised leisure activities?
- If so, how often do they take place? Will I have to pay for them?
- Will my religious needs be met and do clergy call at the home?
Transport
- Is there transport provided to and from the respite care centre?
- Is there specialist transport?
Booking
- Is there a waiting list?
- How long in advance do I have to book?
- What day of the week does the care week start? Can this be flexible?
Access
- Is there easy access for wheelchairs or walking frames throughout the centre?
- Are there wheelchairs or other equipment available? Is it free? For hire?
Meals
- Are special diets catered for?
- Is there a choice of food?
Health
- What would happen if my condition drastically deteriorated?
- Are there any qualified staff to provide nursing interventions that I need?
- What specialist services are available locally?
