Course for Carers

'Looking after Me' is a course for adults who care for someone living with a long-term health condition.

Expert Patient Courses especially for Young People

There are also expert patient courses especially for young people, run by young people called Staying Positive.

More details can be found here

Self Management Courses

Self management/Expert Patient courses run for two and a half hours over six weeks. Courses are delivered by lay people who themselves have a long-term health condition and have been specially trained to deliver the course.

Since the programme started in 2001, a number of people with MS have trained as self management tutors. The MS Society no longer delivers separate courses, but works in partnership with the EPP Community Interest Company to encourage people with MS to take up this course.

To find out more about courses in your area contact your local PCT or
visit EPP CIC website.

There are now a variety of courses on offer, including courses for people living with a long-term condition, courses for carers and workshops for young people age 11-18 who are living with a long-term condition. The majority of the courses are delivered "face to face" but there are also some courses delivered online, for people who can't get to a course, or for some reason, don't want to go to a local course.

Staying positive workshops

The Expert Patient Programme CIC is working with The Elizabeth Foundation and Romford YMCA on behalf of Barking and Dagenham PCT to offer free self management workshops for young people (aged 12 – 18years) living with a long-term condition. The workshops will take place in  Romford YMCA, Wednesday 24th February 6pm – 9pm for 6 weeks

The workshops are run by trained young people who are also living with a long-term condition and are aged 15 – 25 years. The workshops have been externally evaluated by Oxford University Primary Care Dept (Oct 2007) and are shown to increase young people’s skills, confidence and social support in managing their condition. Workshops cover issues of importance to teenagers such as managing medication and treatment, communicating with doctors and teachers, relationships, socialising and transition from children’s to adult services.

For further information, see Barking & Romford poster (546 kb) [doc]

For booking form, see Workshop Referral Form (541 kb) [doc]

Please complete the referral form with the young person’s permission and fax or email to Jo.langley@eppcic.co.uk  or fax 01225 731301.
