MS Society Library
The MS Society National Information Centre offers a range of information services to those affected by multiple sclerosis (MS), whether professionally or personally. You can:
- Search the Library database on the internet to find out what we hold
- Keep up-to-date with the latest literature on MS with our current awareness services
- Request loans of books, DVDs and CDs
- Order photocopies of articles held in the Library
The Library database includes:
- The full text of MS Society publications including all of the MS Essentials series and many articles from MS Matters published since 2004. Simply find the record, click the link and read the document.
- Web links to key publications and articles on MS produced by other organisations.
- A shopping cart – find and request loans of books, DVDs and CDs, by email. (Requests for articles not published by the MS Society must still be made by post with a signed copyright declaration and payment.)
- Easily identifiable information for a lay audience or for younger people – the library includes a wide range of information on MS: from highly scientific material through to information for people affected by MS. Just add the terms “lay” or “children” in the Primary Audience search box to find the appropriate information.
- DOI links to professional journals – this means that if your institution subscribes to the relevant journal, or the article is ‘open access’, the links we provide will take you straight to the full article. If not, you will still usually be able to access the abstract.
Current Awareness Services
If you would like to keep up-to-date with the literature on MS, you can sign-up for any of the current awareness emails sent out from the Library:- Weekly or monthly research alerts listing new papers about MS added to the PubMed database
- New in the MS Society Library – a monthly selection of items added to the Library database. See a sample issue.
- Book reviews – reviews of books for a lay audience written by people with MS
To receive any of the above, please email the Librarian stating which you would like to receive.
Borrowing from the Library
The Library lends books, CDs, DVDs and videos
We lend to anybody with an interest in multiple sclerosis, whether personal or professional, who has a UK postal address.
You don’t have to visit the library to use it. If we have something you’d like to borrow, but don’t live locally, we will post it to you. The only cost to you is the postage when returning it. All we need is your name, address, telephone number and email address.
The loan period is one month, at the end of which you should either return the item (whether in person or by post), or contact us to renew it for a further month.
How to request a loan
However is easiest for you:- By phone - 020-8438 0799 from 10.00 – 3.00, Monday to Friday
- By email
- From the shopping cart in the Library database. As you search the database, click the “Add to cart” link on each item that you’re interested in. When you’re ready, go to the shopping cart. At the top of the screen is a box which says “Request”. Click on the “Go” button next to it, complete the form that appears (remembering to include your full contact details), then click on the “Send” button. Your request will be sent to the Library.
Ordering photocopies
The Library holds a small, but specialised collection of journals. We can also provide articles from journals we do not hold (via a world-wide interlending and document supply network). Please note that we only supply copies to people with a UK postal address.
Since 31st October 2003 the law has required that we receive a copyright declaration form signed by the end user before we can supply any photocopies.
Rates are:
- £3.50 (inc. VAT) for items held in the MS National Information Centre
- £8.50 (inc. VAT) for items we have to obtain from elsewhere.
