Please see links below for our filmed MS Society Awareness Talks available to watch on the internet. This lectures so far are on a range of subjects such as disease modifying drugs, and family issues.

You can watch films of the talk in sections on YouTube, or read the transcript of the lecture together with the slides. For some presentations, you may find it useful to download the relevant slides as they are not always clear on the video.

Childhood MS - April 2008

Helen Chambers from the MS Society  In our latest filmed Awareness talk, Helen Chambers from the MS Society answers questions regarding multiple sclerosis (MS) in children in easy to understand language.

In this interview, she explains what happens in MS, what myelin is, what the symptoms are, what the current treatments are, what help and support is available for children with MS, and much more.

An online Question & Answer session relating to this interview gives the opportunity for those of you affected by MS in childhood to ask direct questions to Dr Evangeline Wassmer, a consultant in paediatric neurology at Birmingham Children's hospital, the Q&A will run for two weeks from Monday 21 April to Sunday 4 May.

 

Diagnosis and limboland - March 2008

Photograph of Dr Mike Boggild  Dr Mike Boggild has been a Consultant Neurologist at the Walton Centre in Liverpool since 1996. His major clinical interest is in the management of MS, with a particular focus on disease modifying treatment in early active MS. He is part of a large multi-disciplinary team which has previously won the Society's Measuring Success award for comprehensive MS care. Since 2002 he has been one of the clinical leads for the long-term monitoring study associated with the MS risk-sharing scheme.

In this filmed talk, Dr Boggild covers how MS is diagnosed, the various tests used, problems with diagnosing accurately and what practical steps can be taken by those who find themselves without a firm diagnosis.
 

Stress and MS - February 2008

Doctor Gail Kinman, Reader in Occupational Health Psychology at the University of Bedfordshire  Dr Gail Kinman is Reader in Occupational Health Psychology at the University of Bedfordshire. She is a Chartered Psychologist with the BPS, a member of the American Psychological Association and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

In this online awareness talk, Dr Kinman talks about the impact and management of stress in MS.
 

Sunshine and MS - August 2007

Professor George Ebers, Professor of Neurology at the University of Oxford  Professor George Ebers is the Action Research Professor at Oxford University's Department of Clinical Neurology. He was responsible for the conception and initiation of the Canadian Collaborative Study on Genetic Susceptibility to MS leading to a network of collaborators and the collection of more than 25,000 patients data.

In this, the fifth of our online awareness talk, Professor Ebers talks about the effects of environmental factors (such as exposure to sunshine) and genetics on MS. 

Managing Relapses - June 2007

Image of Dr Jeremy Chataway  Dr Chataway is a consultant neurologist at St Mary’s Hospital and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. He was awarded a PhD from Cambridge University in the genetic epidemiology of multiple sclerosis, and has specialised in neurology over an eight year period. He is particularly interested in clinical trial work and service development in multiple sclerosis. In this, the fourth of our filmed online talks, he discussed the management of relapses in multiple sclerosis.

Alasdair Coles  Dr Alasdair Coles works at the Department of Neurology at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge in the UK.

In the second of our filmed presentations to go online, he talked on the development of two new drugs for MS
  • Tysabri and
  • Campath 1-H

He also discussed their effectiveness and the problems surrounding them.
