Stepping stones - Free telephone counselling service

Stepping Stones is a voluntary counselling agency at Newman University College, Bartley Green in Birmingham.

The service is co-ordinated by Dr Tony Ward, who is a chartered psychologist and qualified counsellor. Dr Ward has experience of counselling in health related contexts, and has worked with clients with ME, MS, head injuries and dementia.
The agency is very happy to receive referrals from members of the MS society, either people with the condition or their carers and relatives.

The service offered is completely confidential and free and is based on telephone counselling although a face-to-face service is also available to anyone who lives locally.

What is Counselling? What can it do for me?
Counselling can offer an opportunity to talk through feelings, anxieties and concerns of day to day living with the effects of MS. A counselling session can be a one-off or can become more long term.

Stepping Stones counsellors are trained to work in an integrated way. This means that they are open to a variety of approaches, depending upon the issues that people bring, sometimes a listening ear is all that is needed. At other times there may be a need for a more active approach to problem solving.

Clients referred to the agency will initially be assessed by an experienced counsellor, and will then be offered further sessions.
