North of England Partnership Forum

"Supporting health and social care professionals, as well as commissioners, Primary Care Trusts etc in promoting best practice in MS services."

What are Regional Partnership Forums?

Regional Partnership Forums are a way that the MS Society and the MS Professional Network work towards supporting professionals at a local level.

The Service Development Officer in the region facilitates each forum which are held 3 times a year.

Over 25 professionals from all over the region attend, including:

  • Occupational Therapists
  • Physiotherapists
  • Rehabilitation Teams
  • Neurologists
  • Consultants
  • MS Specialist Nurses
  • Primary Care Trusts Representatives
  • Social Service Managers
  • And others

What has been discussed?

The main benefit has been having the professionals together talking on issues affecting people affected by MS.

Specific issues have been:

  • NICE Guidelines
  • National Services framework
  • Equity of services in the region
  • Sharing good practice throughout the region
  • Understanding professionals' roles throughout the region
  • Bridging the gap between front-line staff and commissioning of services.
  • To have a Directory of local services available for people affected by MS.
These issues are now being addressed through the development of sub-groups, with the Service Development Officer facilitating these.

What do they achieve?

By having this forum structure, the MS Society is meeting two of its main priorities:
  • To work in partnership with professionals to achieve national standards of care for people with MS.
  • To continue to push for more MS Nurses and other MS Specialists.

By working with professionals in partnership through the forums, the Society can influence changes in care and service provision for people affected by MS.

Who else is involved?

Lead Professional: Janette Curlis an MS Specialist Nurse based at the RVI in Newcastle.

Lead Volunteer: Eileen McGonnell has vast experience of working within the health service organisation. Eileen's role is to feed into the Sub-groups on the progress of the partnership forum and also to report to the Regional committee.

On any health services or Social Services issues, please feel free to contact Jeremy Harris, Service Development Officer.
