Norfolk Carers

SHIMS (Suffolk help in MS)

Suffolk Carers

Details: Suffolk Family Carers and Suffolk Fire Service have developed an initiative to help vulnerable people and carers. A confidential register is being developed which the fire service can use at the time of fire so they deal with your needs in safe, sensitive and understanding manner. When you register you can also ask for the community safety officer to visit your home to discuss and put in place any fire safety improvements.

Suffolk Family Carers run a range of services including training courses, information support and advocacy, respite and intermediate care, a helpline and a young carers project.

Swaffham Meadow House

Details: The MS Society has reached agreement with Norfolk Social Services to contract a 'respite bed' at Meadow House in Swaffham.

Some of you may already be familiar with this home, which provides 24 hour nursing care with some rehabilitation services for 28 long-term residents with physical disabilities.

Meadow House already has one respite bed. This second bed is solely for the use of people with MS primarily from within the Norfolk locality. However, spare weeks can be taken up by people from neighbouring areas. Respite bookings should be made through a social worker.

Telecare and Assistive Technology in Suffolk

Details: Assistive Technology/Telecare consists of equipment and services that support your safety and independence in your own home. Equipment can include detectors or monitors, (eg motion or fall detectors) often linked to a community alarm system, that trigger a warning at a central centre that can be responded to within a defined timescale.

Don't forget if you need general information or support on MS matters you can call the MS Helpline on 0808 800 8000.

Lines open 9am - 9pm Monday to Friday. There is also an email support service available and face to face counselling for anyone able to get to the MS Society national centre.
