People with MS have higher levels of immune molecule in their spinal fluid
30 Sep 2008
A protein that helps dampen the immune response is more abundant in the spinal fluid of people with multiple sclerosis (MS), suggesting that the protein, called TREM-2, may be a contributor to the condition. The study was published in the Journal Brain this month.
MS is caused by an over-active immune system. While it initially seems that more of a protein which can dampen the immune response would be beneficial, in fact this protein does not appear to be located in the correct place to do its job properly.
Dr Laura Bell, Research Communications Officer for the MS Society said: “This is early stage research, but it gives an exciting insight into some of the underlying causes which may be involved in the development of MS. The next stage involves finding out exactly what role this protein is playing and whether it is worth further study as a potential treatment target.”
