Stem Cells – in the news today
A letter from Simon Gillespie, Chief Executive of the MS Society, was published in today’s Times raising concerns about stem cell treatments currently being sold to people with MS from clinics overseas.
The letter, co-signed by Professor Colin Blakemore, Chair of the UK Stem Cell Funders Forum, and Lord Patel, Chair of the Steering Committee of the UK Stem Cell Bank and for the Use of Stem Cell Lines, says: “There is concern that these unproven treatments could be dangerous, potentially exposing patients to the risks of uncontrolled and inappropriate tissue generation. We would urge anyone considering visiting clinics overseas to obtain treatments not available in the UK to seek advice from their consultants and GPs and to weigh the risks carefully.”
