Prolife group challenges cloning regulations

The House of Lords is to hear an appeal from the Prolife Alliance, challenging regulations allowing human embryo cloning for medical research.
The Alliance says the regulations are based on illegal extension of a law enacted in 1990. Its argument centres on the definition of an 'embryo' created by cell nuclear replacement, a process unknown when the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act was passed. It is calling for a parliamentary and public debate. The House of Lords, Britain's highest court, gave no reason for its written ruling. It is expected to hear Prolife's case later this year.
