Carer's Allowance goes On-line
05 Dec 2003
Claiming Carer's Allowance has been made easier with the introduction of an on-line service.
Junior Minister Maria Eagle said, "The allowance currently helps some 430,000 people who care full-time for disabled relatives or close friends. We are determined that others who may be entitled should have every opportunity to apply and the new e-service brings the process bang up to date.
"Many people don't see themselves as carers because they think they are just carrying out their family responsibilities. It is important that these people know money could be available to them. They can claim by phone, in person at local Jobcentre Plus offices and now on-line.
"This builds on the improvements we have already made to Carer's Allowance. We have increased the amount of money carers can earn without affecting their benefit and removed the age limit so that carers of pension age are also entitled. Carers on low incomes can get an extra £25 a week."
Carers Allowance is £43.15 a week and an addition for a dependant adult can be claimed. It can be paid to carers over 16 who provide regular and substantial care for a severely disabled person (receiving the middle or highest rate of Disability Living Allowance care component, Attendance Allowance, or the equivalent rates of Constant Attendance Allowance.)
