MS support volunteers - The local link for people affected by MS

You can help people affected by MS by providing information and emotional support whilst working as part of a team in your local branch.

You will find it a rewarding role, with plenty of opportunities for developing your own skills and knowledge, as well as meeting other people.

Your role

  • Signposting people to local statutory and voluntary services that can help
  • Providing emotional support face-to-face and over the telephone, to people affected by MS and those who are newly diagnosed
  • Providing information about MS and its management
  • Providing information about benefits and other sources of financial support

Skills & qualities

Professional qualifications are not necessary; however, you will need to have empathy for people affected by MS. Listening skills and an awareness of confidentiality are essential. A willingness to undergo training is also expected.

You will find this a richly rewarding role. You will be directly helping people access services which will maximise their independence and quality of life.

Disclosure
People with MS are legally defined as vulnerable adults. Any volunteer carrying out this role is likely to come into one-to-one contact with people with MS so all volunteers will be required to apply for a Disclosure check. Having a criminal record will not automatically debar any volunteer from their role as it will be considered with reference to the role being carried out.
