Volunteering with the MS Society

Volunteering for the MS Society
The Multiple Sclerosis Society has over 9000 volunteers all of whom play a unique role in helping the MS Society to provide the support and information that people affected by MS need. We offer a range of volunteering opportunities and hopefully one of these will suit you.

As well as supporting our work, volunteering for the MS Society can be fun, rewarding, a great way to meet new people and an excellent opportunity to use your existing skills or develop new ones. You don’t have to be someone affected by MS to volunteer for the MS Society.

There are so many ways you can volunteer to help the MS Society and people affected by MS. If you're interested in volunteering or would like to find out more, please complete a volunteer application form. You can also have a look at the opportunities that are available by clicking on the links to the right of the screen as well as some frequently asked questions.

  • Sue's story - a volunteer on the Helpline

a woman on the phone"I was diagnosed with remitting/relapsing multiple sclerosis (MS) in 1990 and took early retirement from a career in nursing in 1995 following two severe relapses. Seeing an ad in MS Matters for volunteers for the home network, I applied and started my training in Spring 1999.

It was sufficiently demanding to give me the buzz that I missed from working whilst giving me a chance to deal with people again. I do one three-hour stint a week and hope that I can relieve some of the panic I felt when I was newly diagnosed".

Sue is now making a difference as one of our 8,000 volunteers, actively working on behalf of the Multiple Sclerosis Society. We are the largest national voluntary organisation that provides support for people affected by Multiple Sclerosis in the UK.

How much time do I need to give?

We have a wide range of opportunities available at different times of the day and many of our roles can be carried out from home to fit around your availability. There are some time restrictions with some of our roles but we will try to find something to suit you and when you can volunteer. Don’t worry if you only have a few hours to spare a month, there will still be a range of ways that you can help.

What skills and experience do I need?

This will vary from role to role but in the majority of cases, training will be given to help you carry out your role.

What training and support do you provide?

As a volunteer, you can expect an induction and ongoing training as well as a main contact for support and information about key employees who can help you.

Can I claim my expenses?

As a volunteer for the MS Society, you will be encouraged to claim all out of pocket expenses that you incur to enable you to carry out your role with no expense to yourself.

Where can I volunteer?

You can volunteer for the MS Society from home, in your local town/city or within you local region. We also have a number of opportunities where you will be asked to travel to our National Offices from time to time to carry out your role in addition to some volunteering from home.

Who volunteers for the MS Society?

We welcome anyone with an interest in the work of the MS Society as a volunteer.

What will I be doing?

This will depend on the role that you carry out but you can be certain that it will focus on improving the lives of people affected by MS. You could be providing support and information to people who are affected by MS in your local area, fundraising to enable us to provide our vital services, helping to improve local health and care services, campaigning on issues that are important to you or helping to develop a website. You can email the Volunteering Development Team or phone 020 8438 0749 to find out more about the opportunities available.

How do I apply?

Please complete a volunteer application form, email or contact the above number to find out more.
