Now please be honest if you did, but I was sent to give a blood test for......

1)  treponemal serology  - Syphillis  [ confused or should it be blush] to the man in the street

2)  Lyme serology - Lymes disease [which I can understand]

3)  Other tests - A CE ANA ANCA & RA Factor

Please tell me anyone, why would the neurologist have ordered the first one? I am rather confused about this one, as I tried searching for any links with MS & Neurology etc etc and didn't come up with hardly anything I could say ..'Oh That's Why'.

If anyone has any knowledge would you let me know, as I am simply racking my brain what on earth the Neurologist saw to ask for that test to be done .... and could you also tell me in 'PLAIN ENGLISH' anything about the others.

Thanks

Hi there, I may be wrong here but I think that something called neurosyphilis can cause all sorts pf neurological symptoms. This normally comes many years after first being infected by syphilis but is caused by the same original bacteria. If you have had a baby in the UK in the last few years you would have had a routine blood test for syphilis with your pregnancy bloods.

Hope thats helps a liitle x

The RA stands for rheumatoid arthritis, the ANA is Anti-nuclear Antibodies and the ANCA is Anti- neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody. I think these are all tests for different autoimmune disorders but if you google them, there is sure to be lots a info out there. There are some realy knowledgeable people who help peolple out on here so I'm sure someone will be ale to give you more information soon

Good luck x

Yes, I was tested for all of these, and 90+ other things as well - most of which the neuro didn't even bother to name for me.  He just told me my bloods had been tested for over 100 things.  Yes, they range from simple vitamin deficiencies to STDs.

It's all quite normal; there are many MS lookalikes.  MS is a diagnosis of exclusion, so only after all the other possibilities have been excluded can an MS diagnosis be considered.

It's the one and only time I would have been glad to discover I had syphilis (although I regarded it as very unlikely).  At least, if I had, it would have been readily treatable these days.

Hey I would say your neuro is being thorough in all those blood tests as an Anitra rightly says there are other  things that can mimick Ms so it is best to rule those things out..so I woould say its positive the neuro need to explore all other avenues..can I ask if you ahve had any other tests scan etc? x

Don't worry; it's normal happy2

Syphilis can cause symptoms that are identical to some MS symptoms. Your neuro is being thorough - which is good!

I think they also use the syphilis test to rule out Lupus (may give a false positive)...

I don't think I got tested for these or maybe I did and they didn't tell me.  I had a blood test after my lumbar puncture but didn't think to ask what it was for.

Must admit I had heard of Lyme disease as I had tried to google my symptoms and come up with something other than MS
