Hi

I am looking for a bit of advice on holiday insurance as I am going on my first holiday as a person with MS this July.  Can anyone suggest where I might obtain this insurance and what cover I need?  For example, I assume I need to be covered for cancellation incase I am unable to travel as well as cover for any treatmemt I might need whilst on hols.  Writing this makes me feel so gloomy as I have little bother with MS (so far my worst thing has been ON) and I have never needed any treatment. I'm hopeful that this will remain the case for my holiday but you never know with this unpredictable monster!

Also I received a letter from DVLA telling me that I have to renew my drivng license every three years.  Is this standard for MSers?  Do I have to make changes to my car insurance?

Thanks so much.

Rhona.

Hi Mumster,

Don't feel gloomy about the insurance - it's worth paying a little extra, because you know you have a special risk most people don't have.  With luck, you won't have many/any problems, just as you haven't 'til now, but, as you say, it's unpredictable, so it's just not worth leaving it to chance.

In the past, I've insured with All Clear (just Google).  They are specialist insurers, for people with pre-existing medical conditions.  I'm not sure my MS added anything to the premium at all, but it does depend on a lot of variables, such as destination (U.S. particularly expensive due to high private healthcare fees), duration, and how active your MS has been.  If you haven't had a relapse in the last year, and haven't got noticeably less able to care for yourself, they will treat the risk of anything happening as almost nil - but at least it's covered if it did happen.

I'm not promising they're the best deal you can get.  If you shop around, you may be able to find better.  But I've found their prices "reaonable" for my needs, without the hassle of searching everywhere.

The MS Soc. also offer their own insurance services, elsewhere on this site: http://www.mssociety.org.uk/ms-support/practical-and-financial-help/insurance/ms-insurance-services/travel-insurance

Dunno how they compare for cost or cover.  Just another alternative.

Re the driving, I'm a non-driver myself, but I think a 3-year renewal is the norm, following an MS diagnosis.

DVLA - 3 year licence is the norm. They contact your neuro for opinion. YES do inform your car insurance as if you dont you could run into loads of problems if you ever need to claim . However if DVLA say you are ok to drive they should NOT put your premium up - report them if they try.
Hope all goes well
