Hi, I use crutches to get around outside the house, but cannot walk to far with them, so gave in to buying a lil' scooter. However, I have only used it a couple of times because I would rather by pass doing stuff that entails using it and rather opt for staying in! I can't help it, but I feel a fool using it and that's solely down to me and my perceptions.
I am looking ahead to employment options in the future and also my hang up with scooters and have decided that I would probably be more comfortable using a manual wheelchair for shopping trips etc and would probably opt for going out and being more independant rather then staying in, plus, I think using a wheelchair when working in an office environment would be more suitable then using a scooter!
I am wrestling with the decision to use a wheelchair because I feel i'm putting myself in it so to speak, prematurely, because it is MY decision, whereas, if an OT or GP suggested I use it then I would be following advice - yes crazy thoughts I know!
I was wondering how I go about all of this...I could buy a chair, but I would like some training on using it safely, curbs and confidence and I have read that a specialist should do all of this. What do other people do? and am I making a sensible decision?
