About to start Avonex - feeling anxious

Hi,

I haven't been on here for a while. I've been diagnosed since 2006 and until a few months ago I was injecting Betaferon but due to lipoatrphy (the loss of the fat layer under the skin) I've had to stop. I am due to start on Avonex tomorrow and I'm feeling really anxious about it - I've got the new Avonex pen and I'm a bit scared that I will find the injections painful. I also used to get flu like side effects, which were really bad, after Betaferon on occassions and as Avonex is a similar drug I'm worried about this too.

Does anyone on here have an experience of Avonex they wish to share with me?

Hello Cheryl. I have no experience of the new Avonex pen, but I was on Avonex for years, so am familiar with the drug itself. For me, and side effects were generally very mild - especially when I remembered to take 2 ibuprofen last thing at night, just after the injection, and two more on waking up the next morning, whether I felt I needed them or not - prevention was much more reliable than cure. But even if I forgot, the side effects were just a bit like a mild hangover - the one glass too many, one hour too late sort, not the wheels coming off sort. After a slightly subdued morning I would be feeling fine. More often than not, though, I had compeltely forgotten I had done the injection the night before. And it is only once a week, so you can choose an night to suit.

I can't say the injection was fun, but it was OK - usually a bit uncomfortable, sometimes I didn't feel a thing. Plus, of course, no site reactions at all.

I found it a very good drug, and the good effects far outweighed the bad ones. It worked well for me for years, then became less effective, but I had had a very good run, and hope that you do too.

Hi Cheryl

My name is Andrea & I was Diagnosed in May 2010. I was started almost immediately on Rebif, but also had to stop taking this because of sore skin reactions and bad flu like symptoms. I then decided on Avonex because it was only once a week & you inject into the muscle so no skin reactions. I have been on Avonex since March this year, I dont have the pen just the normal needle. I did my first injection with my ms nurse and was surprised at how painless it was. I had very little side effects, maybe just a headache occasionally or feeling a bit achey. I have tried taking this injection at different times during the evening, and have found the best time for me. I do the injection at 9pm, and then take paracetamol when i go to bed around 10.30-11.00. I find I then sleep through the worst of the side effects, and only occasionally have had to take paracetamol the next day.

I hope this helps & good luck

Andrea xx
