Clywedog Sailing Project

A sailing programme for people with MS and those with limited movement organised by The Montgomeryshire Association of Neurological Groups and Organisations (MANGO) in conjunction with Staylittle Outdoor centre and the Clywedog Sailing club.

Who are MANGO?

The Montgomeryshire Association of Neurological Groups and Organisations (MANGO) brings together voluntary neurological organisations from across North Powys to influence the development of local services in this rural part of North Wales. MANGO is becoming a voice for people affected by neurolocial conditions throughout the area, influencing changes.

What did the project involve?

Working in conjunction with Staylittle Outdoor centre and the Clywedog Sailing club, funding was secured to develop a sailing project for people with MS and those with limited movement. The branch was able to use this money to set up a programme of sailing days, utilising specially designed dinghies and a wheelchair accessible transport craft. The project has been an overwhelming sucess, and the branch is now looking to accommodate a broader cross-section of people.

Personal experiences of the event

What is the MS Society's position on developing local services?

It is government policy to provide patient centred services that will enable people with long term neurological condtions to maintain their independence and well-being and lead as fulfilling lives as possible. The MS Society fully endorses this approach and a key aim for us is to involve people affected by MS to get involved in the planning and development of their local services. Often the result is to bring about real improvements and lasting change.

What can you do?

This booklet is one of a series showing how much can be achieved when enthusiastic people come together to work on a local project. We hope you will enjoy finding out about the project and watching the video.

If this inspires you to support this project or find out more about our work, please get in touch.
