Chairman's reveiw of 2008

21 January 2009

Hi all,

First of all I would like to start by thanking all those people who have given up their time to help us be it financially or practical help ... Where to start?

Staines & Ashford LIONS ... Thanks for the fund raising you do on our behalf it really is appreciated ... The LIONS fair of this year was in all honesty the best I'd attended to date ... probably because Alastair took so much time out for us ... magic ... and of course so many people attending, we also now have help at our weekly meetings as a direct result of the Fair .. more on that in a while! Thanks to all.

Weybridge Ladies .... Orange & Black Ball also the Trek of the Grand Canyon completed by Pauline & Jacqui on our behalf. Where would we be without the funding these wonderful ladies have raised for us? We certainly would not have taken members out to lunch and we would not have offered so many therapies to our members we have so much more planned for next year .. we have so much to be thankful for!

Adrienne Peebles ... Thank you so much for running the Marathon on our behalf.

Concert for Linda ... another brilliant fund raiser that attracted so many people, what a lovely day all in memory of Paul Summertons mum ... Linda ...who had her organs donated to the MS tissue bank .. I'm sure mum would of been proud and happy that we are helping so many people with MS thanks to Paul & Linda.

Woking Rotary ... helped at the Concert for Linda and matched what they'd taken. Thanks.

Heston Freemasons ... raised us a nice figure of money in memory of one of our 'former' members.

Thanks to all the shops, pubs and other venues that have had our collecting tins on their premises, again raising much needed funding for the Branch to enable us to help those with MS.

British Airways .. Always helping us with funding annually plus helping with raffle prizes and flights to meetings ... we were beneficiaries of the Community Volunteering Awards 08, that are presented every December.

Salesforce.com ... Very recently have involved their staff in helping us on a Friday ... every week ... this is brilliant ... Thanks to Danielle & Philip.

Friday Club ... Thanks to Iris & Michael, this club has almost doubled in size over the last year or so.

Volunteer Drivers ... where would we be without you?

Cllr Sider ... Robin where would we be without your support & guidance?

Debra Wells .. Thanks Deb, good luck for the future.

Melody Chick… Thanks for all your hard work and support.

Donna... My wife, thanks for all your help and support.

The Committee .. if it were not for those on the Committee we would in no way be able to help as many people that we currently do, it is a nice feeling for me as Chairman to be able to rely on others knowing that they are not going to let me down also to know that all are as passionate as myself in helping people with MS as a direct result of this and all the funding raised ..

We help people with
• Alternative therapies ...
• ad hoc coffee mornings... new initiative.
• flicks with Chris ... new initiative.
• Lunch with Christine
• ..... we do so much more!

We now get between 25 & 40 people out at our 'new' monthly ventures where we supply a buffet at each enabling more to come out.

We are now seen as one of the more socially active Branches in the London region, probably the country! getting many people out! We can only do this with the support of others!

I'm sure I've missed out some ... Apologies if I have, it is not intentional. (Could I ask those that are in touch with people on this mail to please forward it to them as I do not have all the addresses I need ... thanks)

Steve (Chairman & Support Officer SMSS)

YUMS - Youngsters United against MS

September 2007

Earlier this year the branch started a new social group YUMS. This group was started with the aim of encouraging younger persons with MS to engage in social meetings and activities with like minded people.

The meetings are held on a monthly basis at The Kings Fairway, Ashford, Middx on a Saturday afternoon with a social event away from this venue arranged approximately every three months. A successful bowling day and bingo evening have previously been had.

Future events scheduled are a theatre trip and banger racing (viewing only!) and disabled water skiing (participation or viewing) with possible bbq (t.b.a).

The YUMS socials are not exclusive to certain age groups – more to encourage/unite younger persons with MS to become involved with the branch and its members in order to help overcome MS together as a group. We are actively trying to involve other branches and have extended invitations to some of these events.

Please see our YUMS page for news and information regarding these social meetings/events.

Harry's Place

30 August 2007

The first "Harry's Place" meeting was held on Thursday 30th August at Hazelwood Golf Club in Sunbury. This social event has come about with Steve Mills and Harry O'Hara finding a pleasant and friendly venue for people to get together on a purely social basis. Carers and members were very well looked after by Steve and the friendly staff who served us with drinks and some very nice lunch-time food.

Fourteen people attended and further dates have been set for the future meetings (roughly every two months). The golf club staff made us very welcome, parking is handy and access to the bar and toilets easy. A good time was had by a group of people all new to us (Wilma and Harry O'Hara), so do try and join in next time. A very big thank you to Steve for arranging this new venture and for running it so smoothly.

For future meeting dates see Branch Diary.
