We are a group of people from Derby and its county who are all linked by multiple sclerosis (MS). We serve all people who have MS (regardless of membership), and those around them: family, carers and friends.

We meet regularly at our Information and Support Centre, and also go on periodic day trips.

We always welcome helpers at our fundraising events. Our current volunteer vacancies are shown to the right.

To join the MS Society please contact the Branch Chairman. You will receive both the monthly LPH News and a quarterly Newsletter from the Derby branch of the Society, as well as the bi-monthly edition of MS Matters, a magazine published by the National Society that contains lots of interesting articles and information.

Making Financial Donations
You can do this by credit/debit card or cheque. You can even donate cash, but please ensure it is given direct to a member of the Committee.

If you want to pay by credit or debit card, please go to the Derby part of the secure Just Giving Website. We will even get an extra 28% Gift Aid donation if you are a UK taxpayer.

If you want to donate by cheque, please send it to us at Lilian Prime House and:

  • Make the cheque payable to the MS Society

  • Include your address so that we can thank you

  • If you are an Income Tax payer and eligible for Gift Aid, please contact the Treasurer

  • Renting Lilian Prime House
The Derby branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Society operates LPH as an Information and Support Centre three days a week, and are now in a position to offer the Centre for rental at other times.

The Centre was purpose-built in 2006, and extended internally in 2007, offering two floors, each with an overall space of 60’x25’. It has been designed from the outset to facilitate disabled access.

The facility is available for regular rental on one or two days a week or evenings, with the option for casual rental on other occasions. Rental charges include heating and hot water. Preference will be given to voluntary groups catering for people with disabilities.

For viewing contact the Centre Manager (01332-611810) when open (Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays 10am to 4pm) or 01332-677377 at other times. A description document is available on our News & Newsletters page.

    Venues Suitability Audit Volunteer
The East Midlands region has been offered the opportunity to take part in a pilot of the new audit tool being developed to assess suitability of venues for MS Society events. The idea is to recruit local volunteers to be trained to perform initial assessments on local venues to determine whether they could be used by us.

The audit tool is a form to be completed by the volunteer at a particular venue, answering fixed questions about whether or not a venue appears to be accessible e.g. parking, ramps, toilet access, etc. This would be used by the team at MSNC as a first step in assessing a venue for a potential MSS event

This particular volunteer role is to help us finalise how the ‘audit tool’ works in practice by visiting 2 or 3 selected hotels in the East Midlands area and then feeding back how the ‘audit tool’ worked in practice and how it could be improved.

Please contact Mary Lowthian (Volunteer Development Officer) at mlowthian@mssociety.org.uk for further details or to express an interest in taking part.

    General Volunteer Vacancies
Do you have a few spare hours a month to help the branch? In return we can offer training and support as well an opportunity to have fun and develop services for local people affected by MS. We need to fill a few key roles and you could be just the person we are looking for!

If you enjoy putting your skills to good use and want to support our work, get in touch to find out how you can help.

We are particularly looking for fundraisers and people who could help on a fundraising team, people to provide support and information, committee members, drivers, and an assistant treasurer. Or you might have other ideas that you would like to develop and we can support you with this. Whatever your interests and skills we would be delighted to hear from you and tell you about how you can help support local people affected by MS.

Contact Paul Gates to find out more, contact details on back page of newsletter or on the Contacts Page of the website, or email chair@msderby.org.uk
