MS Essentials 01: Managing relapses

The MS Society publishes a booklet on the management of relapses in its MS Essentials range, available free.

Remission

What is a remission?

The period of stability between relapses when symptoms settle down or disappear is known as remission. Remissions can last any length of time, even years. No one knows exactly what makes MS go into remission.

What causes a remission?

Once the inflammation that causes relapses dies down, the block is relieved. In addition, the central nervous system can repair by itself some of the damage done to myelin (this is known as remyelination). Even when there is not complete remyelination, people can still recover from the symptoms of a relapse.
