Getting the best from social care services

At their best, social care services help people to live fuller, more rewarding lives, providing support when it is needed, in an appropriate way. But it’s not always easy to access support in a way that suits each person and their individual circumstances. Services available do vary from area to area.

This section gives an overview of what might be available, how to find out more locally, and how you might access those services.

You might be in contact with many different people from social care services, so keep records and always ask how long it will take for things to happen. And with a changeable condition like MS, it might pay to plan ahead, if you can – it can take time to get services in place.

Social care services are changing quickly, with schemes offering people more of a say in how they arrange services for themselves. The newest of these schemes – Personalised Budgets – allows a great deal of freedom for someone to spend their own care budget in the way that best helps them.
