What is respite care and where do I find it?
Respite care is short-term care that gives people a break - something that should benefit both the carer and the person cared for.
The MS Society Respite Care Homes and Centres are:
- Brambles
- Helen Ley
- Leuchie, and
- Woodlands
Brambles
Situated on ground level, a short distance from Horley town centre. It is a purpose built respite care centre for people with MS. It has 28 single rooms each with an adjustable bed, en-suite WC and electric ceiling hoist.Qualified nurses and experienced care staff are available throughout the day and night. There is a physiotherapy and hydrotherapy unit where guests are advised on individual treatment programmes by a qualified physiotherapist. There are outings, including visits to the seaside, country parks and shopping and therapies such as reflexology and aromatherapy are available.
Helen Ley
A purpose-built single storey specialist centre offering respite, set in extensive landscaped gardens with full wheelchair access. There are 23 rooms and a high range of specialist equipment. There are trained staff, including nurses on hand 24 hours a day. Neuro-physiotherapy is offered. Hairdressing, manicure, aromatherapy and reflexology are all available.There is a Leisure Organiser to arrange a varied weekly programme of events.
Leuchie
Situated in North Berwick in East Lothian, Leuchie is an 18th century mansion house set in its own grounds.Leuchie is staffed by dedicated personnel, including nurses on hand 24hrs a day, who are fully aware of the needs of people with Multiple Sclerosis. The house can accommodate 20 guests for holidays of 11 nights, bedrooms are designed for one or two persons, multi-posture beds and remote control televisions are available in all rooms. In addition carers/partners can stay in separate carers rooms.
There is a physiotherapy suite and complementary therapies such as reflexology and aromatherapy. There are outings including shopping trips, beach outings in the summer and swimming in nearby North Berwick Pool. In-house activities include concerts, evening entertainment and a Computer Centre fully equipped with specifically adapted aids.
