What is a neurologist?
If someone is concerned about symptoms they are experiencing, the first person to go and see will be their GP. If a GP suspects that a person has MS or another neurological condition, they will refer to a neurologist.
A neurologist is a doctor who specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions of the nervous system (the brain, spinal cord and nerves). Many neurologists also have additional training in one area of neurology such as multiple sclerosis, parkinson's disease or stroke.
How can a neurologist help?
The neurologist is responsible for making a diagnosis and prescribing treatments. They will explain the diagnostic process, the tests they may have to carry out and how long it is likely to take. They may also be able to provide patients with written information regarding their condition.Neurologists can also make referrals to an MS nurse, if there is one in the area. MS nurses are an invaluable source of information, support and advice as they have much experience of helping people living with MS.
The neurologist will keep a person's GP informed about the diagnosis and proposed treatment.
