What is an MS Nurse?
The MS specialist nurse is pivotal in providing a greater understanding of the condition, and by adopting an holistic, collaborative and coordinated approach can help people, where possible, reach their goals of self-management.
The MS Nurse role also involves acting as a kind of consultant, working with the GPs, other therapists, employers and with MS charities and also providing a resource for staff striving towards greater awareness and knowledge of MS in the health and social arena.
The first appointment to see an MS nurse is usually by referral from the neurologist and after this it may either be by self-referral or by the GP. There are several ways to see if there is an MS nurse in any given area, by speaking to the hospital where you see your consultant or by asking the local MS Society branch. You can also call the MS Society service development team on 020 8438 0742.
The MS Society is in the process of compiling a database of all MS specialist services around the UK.
